Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Six years before that, Gorbachev came to power in 1985. He died on Tuesday at the age of 91 while undergoing treatment at the Central Clinical Hospital of Russia.

Just as he is credited and beloved by many in the West for ending the Cold War in the world without any bloodshed, he is also responsible for the collapse of socialism in Russia.

Reacting to the news of his death, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “It is true that Gorbachev changed the course of history.” He also realized that reform was needed. So he tried to provide his own solutions to urgent problems. He took the helm of the country at a very challenging time.”

Gorbachev introduced reforms. But it could not save the Soviet Union from the slowly approaching collapse. And many Russian citizens blamed him for the chaos, loss of dignity, and economic suffering that has been going on in Russia for years following this decline.

However, within Russia, Gorbachev is seen as a democrat who tried to do the right thing, in the eyes of those concerned with Putin’s brutal crackdown on dissent and free speech.

But Russian President Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, expressed a rather harsh view of Gorbachev. According to him, Gorbachev was wrong to believe in ‘eternal harmony’ with the West.
