Rangpur: The court has ordered the death penalty of two brothers named Safiqul Islam and Saiful Islam in connection with the murder of an autorickshaw driver in Gangachra of the district.
Judge Tariq Hossain of Rangpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 gave this verdict on Wednesday (August 31) afternoon. The two convicted accused are on bail and are currently absconding.
The accused are sons of Mofizul Islam of Gokalpur Dhanipara village of Sadar Upazila of Rangpur. Government lawyer Naynur Rahman Tofi confirmed this information.
According to the details of the case, auto rickshaw driver Abul Kalam Azad, son of Abdul Haque of Nekirhat village of Taraganj upazila of Rangpur, was hired by four passengers on August 24, 2016, after talking about a place called Khalea in Gangachra upazila. Then the autorickshaw driver took him to the paddy field at gunpoint on the side of the road and hacked him to death. Later, leaving the body there, they fled in an auto-rickshaw.
The next day after the body was recovered, the victim’s mother Mokhlesena Begum filed a case at Gangachara police station. While investigating the case, the police arrested Safiqul and Saiful. During the initial interrogation, two accused confessed to the murder and hijacking the autorickshaw. Later, both gave a confessional statement under section 164 in the court. Later, the police filed a charge sheet against the two accused in the court. After the testimony and interrogation of 16 witnesses in the case, the two brothers were found guilty and ordered to be hanged.
Lawyer Naynur Rahman Tofi said that the plaintiff has been able to prove the evidence. The state party is satisfied with the verdict as the two accused have been ordered to be hanged. The two accused were released on bail after their arrest. Since then they are absconding. The judgment will be executed from the date of arrest.
Meanwhile, Alauddin Alamgir, the lawyer of the accused, said that they are not satisfied with this verdict. They will appeal to the high court.
