G 24 Hours Digital Bureau: The US issued a major warning amid rising tensions between China and Taiwan. The US said that if China attacks, the situation of the people of Taiwan will be like that of the Uyghur Muslims. Taiwan should understand what is happening to Uyghurs, says the head of a US organization that monitors religious freedom around the world. ‘You should know that if you fail to protect Taiwan, the people of Taiwan will suffer the same fate,’ Nuri Tukrell, chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, told the two-day conference.
‘You have to understand what is happening to the Uighurs’
The Religious Freedom Forum in Taipei said, ‘Communist authorities have made it clear that Taiwan should understand what is happening to the Uyghur people’. He added that ‘the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity reflect the Chinese rulers’ intentions for Taiwan and the world’.
Taiwan is increasing its defense budget
Amid rising tensions with China, Taiwan may increase its defense budget by 13.9 percent next year. According to a report by the DPA news agency, total spending on the national defense sector in 2023 will reach 586.3 billion Taiwan dollars (TWD) ($19.4 billion). This includes, among other things, 108.3 billion Taiwan dollars to purchase advanced fighter jets.

In a proposal submitted to parliament for the 2023 annual budget, Taiwan’s defense ministry said the military had decided not to purchase the M109 self-propelled howitzer. They decided to replace these with 18 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems. The proposal also states that the US will supply Taiwan with 11 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 64 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).
China has started the exercise
In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on August 2, the Chinese military conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan in early August. Taiwan also says it faces China’s expansion of military activity in recent years. Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949. But China considers it as part of its territory. China opposes any formal communication between Taipei and others.
