Vegan mother from Florida gets life sentence: A US court sentenced a ‘vegan’ woman to life in prison for killing her infant son due to malnutrition.
38-year-old Sheila O’Leary’s entire family followed a strict vegetarian diet
Washington: Today, the ‘vegan’ movement is growing all over the world. ‘Vegan’ i.e. vegetarians claim that humans do not need non-vegetarian food like fish and meat to survive. Necessary nutrients are found in fruits and vegetables. But, a recent incident in America has thrown this theory into question. A US court sentenced a ‘vegan’ woman to life in prison for killing her infant son last Monday (August 29). Allegedly, he used to feed his 18-month-old son only raw fruits and vegetables. As a result, the child died due to severe malnutrition.
The convicted woman is Sheila O’Leary. Sheela, 38, is a resident of Florida. His entire family followed a strict vegetarian diet. The investigation revealed that Sheila and her husband Ryan Patrick O’Leary ate only raw fruits and vegetables. They even gave this food to 18-month-old baby son Ezra O’Leary. In addition, he received mother’s breast milk. Ezra died in September 2019. Investigators said, at that time the child’s weight was only 8 kilograms! Although 18 months old, he had the size of a 7-month-old baby. An autopsy revealed that little Ezra had died of malnutrition. During Shila’s trial, an investigating officer told the court that the child had been starving for 18 months.
In June this year, he was found guilty of several charges including murder, child abuse, involuntary manslaughter, child neglect. On Monday, a Florida court sentenced him to 30 years in prison. He was also sentenced to an additional five years in prison for child neglect. Her husband, Ryan Patrick O’Leary, is also currently in prison as an undertrial. The couple has two other children aged 3 and 5. Investigators said they were also suffering from malnutrition. The judge said that in addition to the prison term, Sheila will not be able to have any contact with the two children.
