Firing across the Taiwan Strait is the first time in a month of tensions. Taiwan forces fired on three Chinese drones for violating airspace on Tuesday. However, Taipei said the shots were fired as a warning, not to harm the drones.
The three Chinese drones came close to a military base on Kinmen Island, off mainland Taiwan. After firing, they headed across the strait to the Chinese city of Xiamen.
“We have the right to self-defense,” Taiwan’s Defense Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday. If such an incident is repeated in the future, stricter measures will be taken.” In this situation, a group of military observers believe that there is a danger of increasing the tension around the Taiwan Strait.
The tension in the Taiwan Strait has been raised since the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, to Taipei, ignoring China’s warning earlier this month. China’s ‘People’s Liberation Army’ (PLA) is accused of repeatedly violating Taiwan’s airspace and waters ahead of military exercises. This is the first time Taiwan has responded to Chinese ‘aggression’.
Commercial flights and navigation in the Taiwan Strait are virtually suspended due to fears of Chinese warplanes and warships. Taiwan claims it is monitoring the movements of five Chinese warships and 21 warplanes deployed in the Taiwan Strait. As a result, commercial shipping in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea has also decreased.
The Chinese Air Force’s most powerful ‘stealth air superiority fighter’ J-20 warplane has also been deployed in the Taiwan Strait, according to Western media reports. Taiwan has also deployed US-made advanced fighter jet F-16V to counter it. Among the vessels deployed by the Chinese Navy in the Taiwan Strait are amphibious landing vehicles. A group of military observers believe that this plan is intended to quickly land troops in the ‘island’ Taiwan in a war situation.

America has been active in helping Taiwan in this tense situation. The US Navy’s guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville have taken ‘significant’ positions in the Taiwan Strait. America’s Seventh Fleet has deployed one of the world’s largest aircraft carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan, the destroyer USS Higgins, and the fast landing ship USS Tripoli.
In addition to this, the United States has started joint war exercises with Japan in the Pacific region west of the coast of Taiwan. The special airborne division and artillery brigade of the ground forces took part in the war exercise called ‘Operation Orient Shield’ which started off the coast of China. Some of the military observers believe that this ‘preparation’ of the Pentagon is to prevent China’s possible attack on the Taiwan Strait.
