Krishnanagar: Krishnanagar was once known as the center of Banediana. Even without that glamour, with only dilapidated structures standing, the palace still attracts tourists today. Sahebra also once gave importance to Krishnanagar, birthplace of poet Dwijendralal Roy. Because of this, around 1840, a Protestant church was built there. Catholic church was built again in 1898. Krishnanagar mud dolls are famous all over the world, which originates from the vortex. (Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Constituency)
Krishnanagar has a longstanding reputation as a meeting place of history and culture. Krishnanagar’s political history is also colorful, with the Rajbari at its center. On June 23, 1757, with the defeat of Nawab Sirajuddaula to the British in the desert of Palashi, the darkness of subjugation fell on the heart of Bengal. The name of Rajbari is also associated with the history of subjugation. It has repeatedly come up in history that King Krishnachandra was also involved in the conspiracy to remove Siraj. It is even known that the British were helped by soldiers and feudal lords from the Rajbari. (Lok Sabha Elections 2024)
Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, that old history has become a cause of political tension. Because Rajbari member Amrita Roy has been nominated by BJP from Krishnanagar. Trinamool has nominated Mahua Maitra. Amrita claims that they are being repeatedly attacked by the Joraful camp by reminding them of history. But Krishnachandra had no choice but to join hands with the English. Amrita claimed that she took such a decision to protect Hinduism and traditional religion from the Muslim rulers, although the Trinamool countered that it was nothing but a distortion of history. Even Mamata Banerjee has warned that there will be no place to hide when the pages of history start turning.
In this environment, on May 13, the fourth phase of polling will be held in Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency. The main fight there is between Trinamool and BJP. Last year Lok Sabha MP Khowan Mahua was accused of raising questions about Adanis in Parliament in exchange for money. He is desperate to enter parliament again from that seat. On the other hand, losing Mahua is also a challenge for the BJP. CPM has again nominated SM Sadi in Krishnanagar. Therefore, Krishnanagar has become one of the high voltage centers of this year’s Lok Sabha elections. So before polling, let’s take a look at the demographics, political equation of Krishnanagar.
