IPL-17: SRH vs RCB | We have successfully set the target, now time to improve the chase: SRH coach Vettori

--

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori feels that after mastering the art of setting totals, it is time for his team to improve their ball chasing as the Indian Premier League draws to a close.

SRH are currently third in the points table with five wins from eight matches. Four of the five wins have come by batting first.

“We have set the total and now we have to see how well we can catch,” Vettri said after the 35-run defeat by Royal Challengers Bangalore here on Thursday night.

After RCB opted to bat at a challenging score of 206 for 7, SRH were restricted to 171 off 8 balls.

The target was easily achievable for a team that has crossed the 250-point mark three times this season, but a rare failure in the top and middle order cost the hosts.

“Obviously, our performance in the last four matches has been disappointing; We played some really good cricket and even though we lost, you can see if we get some wickets at the back end, we can still chase it,” said Vettori. In the post-match press conference.

“Those early wickets broke everything. We were confident of the score we could score. We thought 206 was a good score and we might have conceded some runs on the pitch. But because of the past experience, we feel confident as a team. self confidence

“We also know that it was set by the openers and how well they played and they had a day off today and that’s cricket,” he said.

The former New Zealand cricketer said there is no easy game in IPL.

“Unfortunately we did not get support at the middle level. It was a tough defeat but we know every team can beat every team in IPL. There is no easy game,” said Vettori.

The coach believes that in high-scoring games, the role of anchor is meaningless.

“I think the wicket is still pretty good. The guys outside the field say it’s a surface you can run on. When you are chasing 207 which is hard to come by, you must be aggressive. It’s a bit difficult for some guys to sit out and play the anchor role together.”

Meanwhile, RCB all-rounder Swapni Singh breathed a sigh of relief as the team ended their six-match losing streak.

“The experience is good but we won more important games. When you win a game it changes the rhythm of the team. It feels good. We have missed the last two games by very narrow margins but there is still a lot to come. Go a long way,” he said.

Swapnil said that even though SRH boasted a super-aggressive batting order, they felt the target was enough on this wicket.

“The ball has stopped. Our main aim was to spin the ball slowly and bowl like fast bowlers. It helped, we knew they were going to attack us hard and obviously they did.

“Yes, we felt that because when we batted the wicket also stopped and there was no dew,” he said.
