The prices of ginger and garlic have suddenly increased in the market. The price of garlic increased by Tk 20 per kg during the week. Also, the price of ginger has increased from Tk 10 to Tk 50 per kg in the last one week.

On Friday, it was seen that local garlic is being sold at 170 to 200 taka in the market of the capital. Besides, imported large garlic is being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 240 per kg. On the other hand, local fresh ginger is being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 320 per kg and imported ginger is being sold at Tk 190 to Tk 250 per kg.

According to market analysis data, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Deputy Director (Market Information) Nasir Uddin Talukder said that the current market price of domestic garlic is Tk 170 to Tk 200, which was Tk 130 to Tk 170 a week ago. Last month its price was 120 to 140 taka. Last year its price was 100 to 120 taka.

Imported garlic is now being sold at Tk 200 to Tk 240 per kg. A week ago it was 200 to 230 taka. A month ago it was 190 to 220 taka. A year ago it was 120 to 140 taka.

Desi fresh ginger is being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 320 per kg. A week ago it was 280 to 300 taka. A month ago it was 240 to 260 taka. At this time last year, the price of native ginger was Tk 200 to Tk 220. That is, the price of native ginger has increased by 47.62 percent in one year.

On the other hand, imported ginger is currently being sold at Tk 190 to Tk 250 per kg. A week ago its price was 190 to 240 taka. A month ago it was 190 to 220 taka. And a year ago at this time the price of imported ginger was Tk 140 to Tk 250. All in all, the price of imported ginger increased by 12 in one year. 18 percent.

Khademul Islam, a ginger-garlic trader in the Kawran market of the capital, said that a large part of ginger comes from outside the country, which means it is imported. The price of ginger depends on the fluctuation of dollar price, both domestic and imported ginger prices have increased by Rs 10 to Rs 50 depending on the quality and size in the past few days. However, the supply of ginger garlic in the market is relatively less. Due to which the prices of these two products have increased.

He also said, on the other hand, the production cost of garlic has increased this time. Before Eid, the price of desi garlic was relatively low, because then the garlic was raw, now the garlic has lost weight due to drying, due to which its price has increased. However, the price of imported garlic did not change much.

Sumon Mia, manager of Ripon Enterprises on Gulshan Badda Link Road in the capital, said that since last one week, the price of ginger garlic is going high in the wholesale market. That’s why we are bringing relatively less goods, sales are also becoming less. When we buy at the price we sell. If the market goes up, the effect falls on the retail market. Although the price of domestic garlic is a little higher, the general consumer is more interested in imported large garlic, which is now selling more.

Rajeev Ahmed, a private employee who comes to the capital’s Malibagh market to market on weekends, said that a week ago he bought local ginger at Tk 280 per kg, but today he has to buy good ginger at around Tk 350. Its price went up within a week without anyone monitoring the market. Because of this, as common buyers, we are buying these at higher prices. But no one can say anything to the traders. Because we are hostage to them. Similarly, due to high demand of imported large garlic, its price has also increased, along with the price of domestic garlic is also increasing.
