Maternal death occurred due to wrong treatment in a private hospital in Cox’s Bazar. He died on Wednesday (April 24) while on life support in the ICU of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

The dead mother’s name is Afsana Hossain Sheela. She is the daughter of Mohammad Hossain of Nunyarchhara, Cox’s Bazar suburb.

Earlier, he was transferred to the ICU of Sadar Hospital in a state of unconsciousness from the private Union Hospital at Sadar Hospital Gate. Apart from a newborn daughter, the stillborn has a 3-year-old son.

The expectant date of delivery of his pregnant wife was May 6, the husband of the obstetrician, Iftekhar, told the media. In the meantime, when I felt a slight pain in the stomach, on April 21 at 11:30 PM, Dr. Shahed brought my wife to Union Hospital near Sadar Hospital with the reference of Dr. Neena Jahan and asked to admit my wife. Afsana was given an injection shortly after admission.
Shortly after the injection was pushed in, she began to experience severe pain. Then on April 22 at 2 am doctors asked to arrange blood for delivery.

Iftekhar also said that after a bag of blood is drawn, a saline is given. Later, around 3:30 am, Dr. Shahed along with two nurses named Himu and Soma took the pregnant Afsana to the operation theater for delivery. Afsana gave birth to a baby girl during the delivery.

Afsana’s relatives said that if the doctors could not stop Afsana’s bleeding, the matter was informed to Dr. Neena Jahan from Union Hospital. Then he sent Afsana to the ICU after bringing her to Sadar Hospital as she said. Sadar Hospital doctors declared Afsana dead at 8:30 pm on Wednesday.

When this news spread, the agitated crowd surrounded the Union Hospital. Later the police came and brought the situation under control.

Relatives of the patient said that the Union Hospital authorities have pushed our daughter to death by giving wrong treatment. Union Hospital will take responsibility for our daughter.

Relatives of the victim’s family and local people thronged the vicinity of the Union Hospital after receiving the news of the death of delivery woman Afsana Hossain Sheela.

They said that a few months ago, Health Minister Dr. Samant Lal Sen himself conducted a raid on the Union Hospital and ordered the ICU unit of the hospital to be sealed.

However, Union Hospital Medical Officer Dr. Mosabbir Hossain Tanim claimed that the allegations made by the relatives of the deceased are completely baseless.

Cox’s Bazar Civil Surgeon Dr. Asif Ahmed Hawladar told Naya Digant daily that a 4-member investigation committee has been formed and a letter has been sent to the supervisor of Sadar Hospital. The civil surgeon also said that doctors specializing in medicine, gynecology and anesthesia will be in the inquiry committee.
