The court sentenced a woman named Sharmin Akhter (36) to life imprisonment for killing her stepson in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba. At the same time, he was sentenced to another six months in prison without paying a fine of 10,000 taka.

District and Sessions Judge Sharmin Nigar passed the order on Wednesday (April 24) afternoon. Sharmin Akhter is the wife of Shamim Mia of Mehari village in Upazila.

According to the sources of the case, the first wife of Shamim Mia of Mehari village went abroad leaving behind two sons and a daughter. Shamim Mia married Sharmin Akhtar to take care of these three children. As their two sons grew up, they left Sumaiya (12) and were living in Dhaka and working on the dis line. On the morning of 21 February 2023, Sumaiya’s body was found in the house. Shamim Mia’s two sons came home from Dhaka after receiving this news. They found black marks on the neck of Sumaiya’s body and informed the police.

Shamim Mia’s son Armin Bhuiyan filed a case with the police station accusing Sharmin Akhter and some unknown others in this incident. In this case, Sharmin Akhter was arrested and filed a seven-day remand in the court. When the court granted a two-day remand, Sharmin confessed to the murder during interrogation.

Later, sub-inspector Liaqat Ali of Kasba police station charged Sharmin in this case and filed a charge sheet in the court. Later, after arguments and witness examination, District Judge Sharmin Nigar sentenced Sharmin Akhtar to life imprisonment as the charges were proved on Wednesday. At the same time, he was sentenced to another six months in prison in default of payment of Tk 10,000 fine.

Brahmanbaria Court Public Prosecutor Mahbubul Alam Khokon said that the accused was present in the court during the verdict. He was sent to the district jail. The learned Court ordered that the period of remand after his arrest shall be excluded from the term of imprisonment.
