Sirajganj: Today Thursday (April 25) is Sirajganj’s Salanga Charia massacre day. On this day in 1971, the invading forces of the Pak Army entered Chariya Shikar village of Hatikumrul Union in Sallanga and brutally killed more than 150 men and women.
Gazi Sohrab Ali Sarkar, the former commander of Sirajganj District Freedom Fighters Sangsad, said that after crossing the Aricha-Nagarbari ferry on April 25, 1971, the Pak Army was coming through the Pabna-Bogra road. Jute holders of Hatikumrul Union and the youth of Charia village left several tree trunks on the road to block the entry of Pak Army. The Pak army stopped there and suddenly started firing mortar cells. The sound of shell bursting spread panic in the area. In this situation, the people of Charia, Patdhari and Haripur villages started running away in fear of their lives.
Pakistani soldiers split into several groups and attacked neighborhoods. To save their lives, some people got disoriented and took shelter in the fields south of Kalibari.
The invading forces went there and attacked. Pak army divided into two groups and rode towards Kalibari. There, 15 people from Hindupara were killed in brush fire. After killing Kalibari and setting it on fire, the invading forces marched towards Madhyapara. Later, 50/60 innocent people hiding in graveyards and forests were caught and killed in brush fire.
