New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come under fire for his controversial comments on minorities in public meetings. More than 17 thousand 400 complaints have been submitted to the Election Commission requesting action against him. Apart from this, allegations of violation of electoral code of conduct against BJP leaders and ministers are also coming from different parts of the country. But despite all these complaints, the Election Commission is not taking any action against the leaders and ministers of the ruling BJP at the Centre, but many parties including Congress, Trinamool are complaining that the opposition is being targeted selectively. It is in this context that the Commission’s ‘Death Certificate’, which is essentially a satirical post (ECI Death Certificate), has spread on social media. Pictures and videos of the funeral organized for the commission have also surfaced, the authenticity of which has not been verified by ABP Anand. (Election Commission)

Before the Lok Sabha elections, the controversy started from the appointment of the Commissioner. The opposition questioned the rationale of appointing the commissioner after removing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and placing the majority of the government members in the committee. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha and the only opposition member of the Election Commissioner Appointment Committee, complained that there was no time to judge who is ahead in the race to become the commissioner. After that, from the announcement of the election to the second round of voting, the opposition has been continuously raising questions about the role of the commission. West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool has also moved on the issue. Abhishek Banerjee questioned why the commission is silent despite bringing forward the evidence about the BJP-NIA meeting ahead of the elections. (Lok Sabha Elections 2024)

In that atmosphere, the role of the commission is criticized on social media. A satirical document called ‘Death Certificate’ has gone viral on social media ahead of the second phase of voting on Friday. Criticizing the commission, the satirical ‘death certificate’ mentions Election Commission of India as the patient’s name. The commission listed Catatonia as the cause of death. In medical science, it is a mental illness in which the patient behaves abnormally. Some became almost speechless. The ironic certificate cited the disease as the cause of death of the commission. As to why this happened, it is written as ‘blindness in certain cases’, ‘genderization of institutions’, ‘Election Commissioner Appointment Act 2023’, ‘spinelessness’. The place of death is mentioned as ‘Institutional Sickness Centre’. The signature on the certificate is ‘Citizen of India’.

Congress leader Srivastava, who is associated with Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Joro Yatra’, former president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress, posted a picture on social media and wrote, ‘Students are hanging this poster saying that the National Election Commission has died on April 21, 2024. The commission, headed by Narendra Modi, has become the BJP’s right-hand man. The 2024 election is a fight to save the country’s constitution and democracy. India vs Modi fight in this fight’.

ABP Anand has not verified the authenticity of the photo posted by Srivastava. However, two posters are seen on a pillar in the picture. One reads, ‘We are saddened to announce that the Election Commission, an independent organisation, passed away on April 21 after a steady deterioration in its health over the past 10 years and recently admitted to hospital.’

Another poster reads, ‘Mourning meeting for departure of Independent Election Commission’ is written over the pictures of three election commissioners. A video of the condolence meeting organized for the commission at Delhi University has also surfaced on social media. ABP Anand did not verify the authenticity of that video. So far, no response has been received from the commission.
