Today is the 142nd foundation anniversary of Khulna district. After Dhaka and Chittagong, the third largest city of Bangladesh is Khulna, a traditional industrial and port city. It is located on the banks of Rupsa and Bhairav rivers in the southwestern part of the country. The city surrounded by rivers and the memory of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R.H.), this beautiful district bordering the Sundarbans is long and square in shape. Khulna is one of the oldest river ports in the country.

In 1842, the headquarters of the new district was established in Khulna centered on Bhairab-Rupsa Vidhaut Punyabhoomi Nayabad Thana and Kismat Khulna. After the establishment of Khulna subdivision, Khulna became important due to the expansion of the administrative area of the British and its geographical position. Khulna district was established on April 25, 1882 through gazette notification with Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira covering an area of 4,630 square miles in just 40 years. Earlier Khulna was a subdivision of Jessore district. Khulna Day has been officially celebrated on this day since 2009 to build a rich future of Khulna by bringing the past traditions of Khulna to the new generation and combining the past and the present.

Every year Greater Khulna Development Struggle Coordinating Committee organizes various programs to celebrate the day. But due to extreme heat, all the programs have been suspended this time. The day will be celebrated by cutting a cake at Khulna Press Club at 10 am only.

From the brief history of Khulna, there is disagreement about the origin of the name Khulna. But the most discussed opinion is that the name Khulna is derived from the ‘Khulneswari Mandir’ built in the name of Khulna, the second wife of Dhanpati Saudagar.

Khulna originates from the word ‘Culnea’ written in the record of the rescue of the sailors of the ship ‘Falmouth’ in 1766. According to scholars, the name Khulna is derived from ‘Kismat Khulna’ Mauza. Many believe that Khulna comes from the word Jessore-Culna written on the British period map.
