367 killed in 358 road accidents in 15 days of Eid: Road Safety Foundation

Before and after this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr, 367 people were killed and more than 1500 were injured in 358 road accidents in 15 days between April 4 and April 18.

This information was informed in a report of Road Safety Foundation on Tuesday.

Road Safety Foundation has prepared this report based on national dailies, online news portals, electronic media and own information.

The report mentions that 63 women and 74 children were killed in various road accidents on the 15th day of Eid.

The report also said that 454 people were admitted to Dhaka’s National Orthopedic Hospital (Pangu Hospital) after being injured in road accidents in the three days of Eid. Most of them are victims of motorcycle accidents.

156 people were killed in 183 motorcycle accidents in these 15 days, which is 42.50 percent of the total number of deaths.

68 pedestrians were killed in the accident, which is 18.52 percent of the total fatalities. 41 people, i.e. 11.17 percent, were killed by vehicle drivers and assistants.

During this time 7 people were killed and 8 injured in three boat accidents. 19 people were killed and 17 injured in 14 railway accidents.

The vehicle-wise casualty figures in the accident show—motorcyclists and passengers 156, bus passengers 18, truck-pickup-coveredvan-tractor riders 26, privatecar-microbus-pajero-jeep riders 28, three-wheeler riders 58, locally-made Nasimon – 9 Mahindra passengers and 4 bicycle-pedal rickshaw riders were killed.

Of the accidents, 129 occurred on national highways, 143 on regional roads, 48 ​​on rural roads and 38 on city roads.

Time analysis shows that 25.69 percent of the accidents occurred at night. Besides, 22.90 percent of accidents occurred in the morning, 17.87 percent in the afternoon, 19 percent in the afternoon, 10.89 percent in the evening and 3.63 percent in the morning.

The Road Safety Foundation said that both road accidents and fatalities have increased during Eid Yatra compared to last year.

Last year, 285 people lost their lives in 240 accidents during Eid-ul-Fitr. According to this year, accidents have increased by 39.20 percent and fatalities have increased by 20.19 percent.
