Argument over torn notes: Son killed, father in critical condition

A youth was stabbed to death over a trivial matter in Mymensingh’s Tarakanda.

A shop owner and his son were stabbed for not accepting a torn Rs 10 note while paying for cigarettes on Tuesday (April 23) night. The son died on the spot but the father was first referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka in critical condition.

According to police and local sources, the murder took place at Majhiali Bazar of Banihala Union of the upazila on Tuesday around 9:30 PM. Sadek Munsir (62) of Digarkanda village owns a grocery shop in the market. He was shopping with his son Iqbal Hossain (22) after Tuesday evening. Farooq Mia of the same village went to buy cigarettes at the shop around 8 pm. As a ten rupee note was torn while giving money, Iqbal asked to change it. But Farooq got angry.

At one point in the argument Farooq called his younger brother Parvez Mia. Later, they quarreled for a while and started hitting Iqbal inside the shop with a knife taken with Parvez. At that time Baba Sadek Munsi was also stabbed. Iqbal died on the spot. Sadek Munsi was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition and was referred to Dhaka around 10 pm.

Wazed Ali, OC of Tarakanda police station, said that the incident of killing happened due to a dispute over paying money while buying cigarettes in the shop. Sadeq Munshi’s condition is also critical. Two people have been taken into custody for questioning in this incident. However, Farooq and Parvez were not found, he said.
