The relationship between Mahmuda Khanam Mitu and former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhter has come under fire due to his relationship with an Indian woman. Mitu and Babul clashed several times over extra-marital affairs. Mitu wanted to get out of the relationship at one point. But thinking about the two children, he withdrew from that decision.
Mitu’s mother Shaheda Mosharraf gave this information in the testimony given to the court in the murder case of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of SP Babul Akhtar in Chittagong. He said, some days ago Babul’s mother herself confessed to him that Babul killed Mitu, we should forgive him.
Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Chittagong on Tuesday. Shaheda Musharraf testified in Jasim Uddin’s court. At that time former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhtar and other accused in the murder case were present in the court.
Mitu’s mother Shaheda Mosharraf said in the testimony given to the court, on April 26, 2002, my eldest daughter Mahmud Khanum Mitu got married to Babul Akhtar. Babul Akter was unemployed then. After marriage, their relationship was not so good from the beginning, it was rough. Later Babul joined the police. Then transferred as SP (Additional Superintendent of Police) to Cox’s Bazar. There he fell in love with a woman of Indian origin.
Mitu saw Babul in an offensive situation with a different woman
Shaheda Mosharraf said, ‘One day Babul Akhtar took Mitu to a hotel in Cox’s Bazar. The woman also got up in the next room. In that woman’s room, Babul Akhtar was seen in an offensive state by Mitu. Then Mitu wants to know what he is doing here? Babul tells Mitu that he is working on the laptop to go abroad. Mitu feels bad seeing both of them in this condition. He was there for a while. As the kids are alone, Mitu comes to their room. After the children fell asleep, he fell asleep too.’
Mitu woke up around 3 am. Babul Akter was still not in Mitu’s room. When Mitu went to the woman’s room again, she found them both in an offensive state. Mitu came to the room crying and called me. Then I told him, you come. Mitu then says, my sons and daughters will think me bad.’
Babul-Mitu lived in a separate room in a house
Shaheda Mosharraf said, after being transferred to Chittagong, Babul used to stay in a separate room even though I was in the same house with my daughter. Babul Akhtar used to talk to many girls till late night. Mitu used to listen to them. Babul went to the mission in 2014. He left a mobile phone at home when he went on a mission. Mitu found the message of the woman of Indian origin given to Babul Akhtar on that mobile phone. At the same time, Babul Akhtar receives two English books gifted by the woman. Mitu writes the messages on two large pages and two small pages.’
Mitu tried to commit suicide
Shaheda Musharraf said, ‘Mitu and her children went to my younger daughter’s house in December 2015. Mitu then gave me the messages written on the page. After telling us this, Babul started physical and mental torture on Mitu. After that, Mitu tried to commit suicide three or four times. Mitu tries to move from Chittagong home to Dhaka. Mitu called me on the night of June 4, 2016. On the phone, Amma says there is a message from Mahir’s school. I have to take Mahir to school early in the morning. On the morning of June 5, a woman called me from near Mitu’s house.
The woman told me that Mitu’s car had an accident due to a cylinder blast. I say, mother, take Mitu to the hospital as soon as possible. I am bringing money. Then Mahir (Mitu’s son) calls from someone’s mobile and says, Nanu, Ammu have been hacked and shot by terrorists. Then I said to Mahir, what is your mother talking about? Mahir says, no, mom is just looking.’
‘I said to Mahir, have you called your father? Mahir says yes nanu, I called, but dad doesn’t talk. I tell Mahir cover your mom with chadar. Then I came to Chittagong by air with my two younger sons-in-law, Ja and younger daughter. I go to where Mitu is murdered. Then I came to Mitu’s house. I heard there Mitu (corpse) is in the hospital.’
Shaheda said, ‘After going home, Mahir hugged me and cried saying, Nanu my mother is gone. Mitu (body) was then brought from the hospital to the police line. He was buried there. After the janaza in the police line, my two brothers-in-law took Mitu’s body to Dhaka in an ambulance. We fly to Dhaka. After that Mitu’s funeral was held at our home Meradia. He was buried there.’
He said that after Mitu’s death, his son Mahir called Babul Akhtar three times. But Babul received the call but did not say anything. Shaheda also called once, but Babul did not receive it.
How Babul planned and executed the murder
Shaheda Mosharraf said, “Babul Akhtar came to Bangladesh three-four times during his stay abroad (mission). Even after returning to the country, he did not go to his home, i.e. Mitu or his children. After completing the mission, he returned to China. Sitting there, Babul plans to kill Mitu.’
Shaheda said, ‘Mitu had a business. Babul killed Mitu with three lakhs of business money. Babul Akhtar came to our house after Mitu died. He was in our house for six months. Sitting there, he interacted with the accused. On June 24 (2016) Babul Akhtar was taken to the DB office. Then Babul left the job from there. I then asked him, why quit the job? Then he says, I have to quit my job because of Mitu’s murder. I tell him, is the matter of leaving your job for the trial of Mitu’s murder?’
‘Babul Akhter buys weapons for Musa with 70 thousand taka to kill Mitu. Musa’s wife said this. Musa’s wife asked him, did you kill Mitu? Musa then told his wife, Babul Akhtar will crossfire me if I don’t kill him. Babul Akhtar told us that the accused of Mitu’s murder have been arrested. I asked to crossfire.’
Shaheda also said that accused Wasim, Anwar were arrested. A few days later Bhola was caught. After being arrested, he testified in court that Musa had killed Mitu on the orders of Babul Akhtar. A month and a half after Mitu’s death, we came to Chittagong to teach Milad at the house where she was staying. After some time, accused Kalu and Shahjahan were arrested. After we came to Chittagong, it seemed that Babul Akhtar had killed Mitu in a pre-planned manner. He filed a case of Mitu’s murder himself with false information.’
‘Babul’s mother says to forgive her son’
Shaheda Musharraf said, ’15 days ago, Babul Akhtar’s mother called me and told me that Bayain, Mitu were killed by my son. You forgive him. I tell him, would Babul have said this when he died?’
It is to be noted that on the morning of June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and stabbed to death by miscreants on his way to drop his son in the school bus at Nizam Road in Chittagong city. At that time, this incident was widely discussed throughout the country. Mitu’s husband Superintendent of Police Babul Akter was staying in Dhaka at the time of the incident. After the incident SP Babul Akhtar returned to Chittagong and filed a murder case against unknown persons in Panchlaish police station.
However, in the case, PBI found the involvement of husband Babul Akhtar in the murder of his wife. The final report was submitted in the earlier case on May 12, 2021. On the same day, Mitu’s father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, filed a second case at Panchlaish police station in Chittagong city, making Babul Akhtar the main accused. On the same day, PBI sent Babul Akhtar to the court after arresting him in the case. Babul is in jail since then.
Meanwhile, Babul’s lawyer filed a complaint on October 14, 2021 against the final report given by PBI in the first case. In view of the application, on November 3 of the same year, Naraji dismissed the PBI report and ordered further investigation into the case. After that, PBI started investigating both the cases. However, the final report of the case filed by Mitu’s father was given on January 25, 2022 as per the instructions of the court. After further investigation in the first case on September 13 of the same year, seven people including Babul were accused and submitted to the court.
On March 13 last year, the court ordered the trial to be started by forming charges against seven accused including Babul Akhtar. The case is currently being heard.
