The earthquake is not leaving behind Taiwan

A few weeks ago, Taiwan was devastated by a strong earthquake. Several cities in eastern Taiwan trembled again. Vibrations felt about five times in 9 minutes. Earlier on April 3, a strong earthquake shook the east coast of Taiwan. The frequency was 7.4. At least 13 people died. The number of injured was more than a thousand. The terrible earthquake caused huge damage. The aftershock lasted through the night. Many roads were blocked due to landslides.

There have been more than 1,000 aftershocks since then.

Buildings across large parts of northern, eastern and western Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, shook overnight. The largest earthquake was of magnitude 6.3. The Flower Hotel in downtown Hualien partially collapsed and tilted precariously during the earthquake, however, it was vacant at the time for renovations. The nearby Tong Shuai Building was also empty, now reduced to rubble after being heavily damaged by the April 3 earthquake.

Schools and offices were ordered closed in Hualien and surrounding counties on Tuesday as hundreds of aftershocks hit the Pacific coast and land, most below magnitude 3. Taiwan is already prone to earthquakes. Located at the junction of two tectonic plates. That is why earthquakes often occur here. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the source of this earthquake was 18 kilometers south of Hualien city, at a depth of 34.8 kilometers from the surface. The city surrounded by mountains was the most affected by the earthquake. Being a vibration-prone country, the multi-storied and various buildings here are constructed with great care, following the rules of experts. Along with that, public awareness campaign is also going on. It was the strongest earthquake in Taiwan in 25 years. Earlier in September 1999, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit Taiwan. It killed about 2 thousand 400 people.
