US human rights report has exposed Hasina government’s injustices and atrocities: Rizvi

--

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi commented that US Human Rights Report-2023 exposed the ‘injustice and brutality’ of Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh.

He said, ‘The report has expressed deep concern over the horrific human rights violations in Bangladesh, including disappearances, assassinations and torture. It is also noted that the right of citizens to change the government through free and fair elections has been taken away.’

Rizvi said these things in a press conference at BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Tuesday.

He also said that the United States report has objectively highlighted the deterioration of the human rights situation in Bangladesh, including the arrest of opposition party leaders and obstruction of their peaceful assembly.

Rizvi claimed that the report has highlighted the real nature of the human rights situation in Bangladesh through visible incidents of injustice and cruelty.

This leader of BNP said that Robert S. Gilchrist, the senior official of the US State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, described the human rights situation in Bangladesh as alarming in the press conference organized on the human rights report.

He said Gilchrist said in the press conference that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was removed through manipulation.

Rizvi also said that during the 1/11 political change, 15 cases were filed against Sheikh Hasina while only 4 cases were filed against Khaleda Zia.

Rizvi alleged that Sheikh Hasina hastily withdrawn 15 cases against her after coming to power by using the judicial department to punish Khaleda Zia in a ‘false’ case.

He also said, ‘We have talked about these issues many times. This time it appeared in the US report. People believed that Khaleda Zia was a victim of political revenge of the government. This time the democratic world has highlighted it through their objective observation.

The US State Department released the 2023 Human Rights Report (HRR) on Monday. The US Embassy described it as a ‘real and objective’ record of respect for human rights worldwide.

The 2023 Human Rights Report (HRR) has been compiled for 198 countries and territories.

The report says in Bangladesh, there have been reports of human rights violations such as extrajudicial killings, disappearances, torture, arbitrary detention, restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of the media, and peaceful assembly.

It claims, in most cases, the government has not taken credible steps to identify and punish human rights abusers or members of the security forces.

Rizvi said, BNP has been talking about the government’s oppression, brutality, disappearances, murders and other misdeeds for a long time.

He also said, ‘Now there is nothing to hide. Sheikh Hasina’s injustice, bloodshed and various misdeeds are slowly coming out in the democratic world. The whole world is condemning it.’
