A woman died after being attacked by a wild elephant while collecting wood in Fansiakhali forest in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

Mehraj Uddin, Phansiyakhali Range Officer, said that the incident took place at Phansiakhali Wildlife Sanctuary of North Forest Division of the district on Tuesday around 12:30 pm.

Deceased Jamila Begum (35) is the wife of Shah Alam of Ringbong Chagirshahkata village under Ward No. 1 of Dulahajara Union of Upazila.

Range officer Mehraj said that in the morning Jamila went to the wildlife sanctuary to collect wood. He died in the afternoon after being attacked by a wild elephant. Jamila Begum’s body has been taken by her relatives to their home.”

He said that in addition to making a general diary (GD) in the police station, the higher authorities have been informed in writing.

He said that no one is allowed to enter Fansiakhali Wildlife Sanctuary without permission. Warning signboards have been put up at several places warning that anyone who enters there may be attacked by wild animals. Apart from this, several awareness meetings have also been conducted.

Still, men and women of various ages enter to steal trees or collect wood without permission. Range Officer Mehraj said that even though there are occasional casualties due to wild animal attacks, human access to the sanctuary is not being stopped.
