Student’s death in DU’s swimming pool: 5-member inquiry committee formed

The university authorities have formed a 5-member investigation committee into the death of a student who drowned while swimming in the swimming pool of Dhaka University’s physical education center.

The committee has been asked to report within the next seven working days identifying whether there is any negligence or fault in the management of the swimming pool.

According to a press release, the Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Muhammad Samad, who is engaged in the routine duties of the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, formed this committee on Tuesday.

Sohad went swimming in the swimming pool with his friends on Monday. His classmates took him unconscious to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30 PM, where doctors declared him dead around 2:00 PM.

19-year-old Md. Sohad Haque was the first year Class-Representative (CR) of Philosophy Department. His home was in Bogra, in Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall of the University.

It is said in the notification, “Md. Professor Md. Proctor at the university to provide a report identifying the cause of Sohad Haque’s unexpected death. Maksudur Rahman was convener and assistant proctor Prof. Md. A five-member investigation committee has been formed with Abdul Muhit as member secretary.

The other members of the committee are – Chairman of the Department of Philosophy, Professor Shah Kawsar Mustafa Abululayi, University Syndicate Member and Associate Professor of Information Science and Library Management Department, Mohammad Sharif Ul Islam and Assistant Professor of Bengali Department and Resident Teacher of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. Describing Sohad’s death, his friend Mohammad Parvez, a student of linguistics, told bdnews24.com, “We were swimming in the swimming pool with some friends. At one stage of the swim and goes in the middle.

“When he sank there, we pulled him up and by pressing on his stomach, some water came out. Immediately he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by rickshaw. After a while the doctor declared him dead.”
