The price of onion has suddenly dropped

MTNews24 Desk: Onion, ginger and garlic markets have been affected by the heatwave that has been sweeping over most parts of the country for several days. Many farmers and wholesale traders are selling these products without storing them due to the fear of spoilage in the intense heat. As a result, the prices of these products have started to decrease due to the increase in supply in the market.

Currently import of onion from India is stopped in the country. The domestic production season is almost over. In this situation, the price of the product started increasing after Eid. But in the meantime, when there is a risk of spoilage of onion due to intense heat, the market goes down.

Traders say that Pabna, Faridpur and Rajbari are among the top onion producing districts. Due to the intense heat, the supply of onions to the market from these districts including other parts of the country has increased.

Traders said that fans are used to keep the environment cool in Mokam, but due to load shedding, onions, garlic and ginger in many warehouses are getting wasted.

In Khatunganj, the country’s largest wholesale market of consumer goods, it has been found that the price has dropped by a jump and currently one kg of local onion is being sold at Tk 45-50. Ginger is being sold at Tk 180-185 per kg. 100-110 kg of local garlic.

The price of imported (Chinese) garlic is between Tk 182-185. In the last two-three days, the price of onion has decreased by Tk 3-4 per kg. 5-10 rupees reduced in ginger and garlic. If the heat wave continues, the traders have given the impression that the prices of these products will decrease further.

Khatunganj Chaktai agricultural products trader. Nazim Uddin said, ‘The risk is high in stockpiling perishable goods. If the products like onion and garlic are good, the price is also good.

But there is a risk of huge losses if it rots. Currently, as the heat is high, these products are being released in the market quickly, leaving aside the thought of profit. Due to this, the price of Indian onion has decreased a bit even though it is not imported.’

Traders in Khatunganj say that the price of the product is going down in the top onion producing districts like Pabna, Rajbari and Faridpur. A week ago, onions were traded at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200 per maund. Currently selling between 1,800 and 2,000 taka.

Md. Proprietor of Khatunganj Messrs. Ira Traders. Omar Farooq Banik told Barta, ‘The price of onion increased slightly before and after Eid. But due to rotting in intense heat, the price is falling slightly. The prices of garlic and ginger are also decreasing.

Onion prices have decreased slightly in the wholesale and retail markets of Rajbari. Abdullah Al Mamun Arju, a trader in Banibah market of Sadar Upazila, said, ‘Farmers are bringing more onions to the market due to the fear of spoilage of onions in summer. Due to this, the price has decreased slightly. The price of onions last week was Tk 50-55, now it has come down to Tk 40-45.

The wholesale market of Faridpur is stable even though the prices have not decreased. Biplab Saha of ‘Mita Banijaloy’ of Haji Shariatullah Bazar said that the price of onion has remained unchanged in Faridpur in the last one week. Jamir Uddin, a wholesale trader in Pabna’s library market, said, ‘Onion prices have not increased for the past one week.’
