Rajasthan Royals (RR) took a step towards the play-offs with their seventh win of the 2024 tournament against Mumbai Indians in intense pulsating lights Jaipur. The men in pink put in a couple of individual performances with Sandeep Sharma and Yasswi Jaiswal taking 5 wickets in T20Is for the first time, Yasswi Jaiswal scoring his second century in the IPL, both against Mumbai Indians. Sharma’s spell of 5/18 allowed Mumbai Indians to chase down 179, while Jaiswal’s superb performance ensured that the Royals were well on their way to their target and extended their dominance at the top of the table.
With this, Royals replicated their own feat of one player scoring a century and another hitting a single in the same IPL match. This is the third time this has happened, the second time for Royals and the rest for Gujarat Titans last year. Mohit Sharma took five wickets in Qualifier 2 after Shubman Gill smashed a century.
Century and FIFA play for the same team in IPL
Jos Buttler (103), Yuzvendra Chahal (5/40) for Rajasthan Royals against KKR in CCI Mumbai 2022
Shubman Gill (129), Mohit Sharma (5/10) for Gujarat Titans vs MI at Ahmedabad 2023
Yashwi Jaiswal (104*), Sandeep Sharma (5/18) for Rajasthan Royals against MI at Jaipur 2024
Overall, this is the fourth time that a century and five wickets have been scored in the same match and the only time that the players who scored a century and took five wickets were from different teams – Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad) in Ahmedabad last year. During the GT vs SRH match held.
It was bliss for the Royals, who ended their home run with four wins from five games in Jaipur, while Mumbai Indians suffered their fifth defeat of the tournament, their tournament slowly fading away.
