Taiwan has been shaken by several earthquakes. Dozens of earthquakes struck eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County from Monday evening to midnight local time. However, no major damage or casualties were reported from these earthquakes. News AFP, Reuters.

Aftershocks were felt in phases on Monday and Tuesday after a powerful earthquake hit the country two weeks ago.

A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 hit the country’s sparsely populated city of Hualien last April 3. At least 14 people were killed. Since then, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been felt in Taiwan.

In addition to the eastern coast of Taiwan and the capital Taipei, the earthquake was felt in southern Japan, eastern China and the Philippines on April 3. Tsunami warnings were issued in these countries due to the earthquake. Later, the tsunami warnings were lifted.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 18 kilometers south of Hualien, Taiwan. Its depth was 34.8 kilometers.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years, according to the country’s seismic agency. Earlier in September 1999, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit Taiwan. At that time 2 thousand 400 people died and about 500 buildings were destroyed.

Meanwhile, several aftershocks rocked buildings across large parts of northern, eastern and western Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, on Monday and Tuesday. The largest of these aftershocks had a magnitude of 6.3.
