Upazila election: 1693 people in the first phase of the election, symbol allocation today

1 thousand 693 candidates fought in the first phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad election. Election Commission (EC) Election Management Branch officials said that this number stood after the withdrawal of nominations on Monday (April 22).

In the first phase, 1,891 candidates filed nomination papers for the posts of chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairman in 150 upazilas.

Among them, 696 candidates submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman, but 95 candidates withdrew. 601 candidates are contesting.

As 79 of the 724 candidates for the post of vice chairman have withdrawn their nomination papers, 645 are in the polling field. Besides, 24 out of 471 candidates for the post of female vice chairman withdrew their candidature, leaving 447 candidates.

The returning officers will allot the symbols among the candidates on Tuesday. They can campaign with the symbol. Elections for this phase will be held on May 8.

This local government election is being held in four phases. Two thousand and 55 candidates have submitted their nomination papers in the second phase of upazila polls. Election Commission Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said that 730 people have filed nomination papers for the post of chairman, 763 for the post of vice chairman and 562 for the post of female vice chairman.

According to the schedule for the second phase, the last date for filing nomination papers was Sunday. Selection of nomination papers from 23 April, acceptance of appeals from 24 to 26 April, disposal of appeals from 27 to 29 April. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is 30th April. Allotment of symbols is on May 2. Voting in 161 upazilas will be held on May 21.

Additional District Commissioners have been appointed as Returning Officers and Upazila Nirbahi Officers as Assistant Returning Officers in this round of elections. Where the number of voters is more than five lakh, there will be more than one Assistant Returning Officer.

As per the phase III schedule, last date for submission of nomination form is May 2, nomination scrutiny is May 5. Appeal against decision of Returning Officer 6 to 8 May.

Appeal disposal from 9 to 11 May. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is 12 May. Allotment of symbols among the contending candidates is on May 13 and voting is on May 29. In this phase, voting will be held in 112 upazilas of 47 districts.

Additional district and additional regional election officers and additional district administrators have been appointed as returning officers in this phase Appeals against the decision of the Returning Officers will be disposed of by the Deputy Commissioner as the appellate authority.

The fourth phase of elections may be held on June 5. The schedule may be Tuesday. EC has called a commission meeting on this day.
