The schedule for the fourth phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad elections may be announced on Tuesday (April 23). The 32nd meeting of the commission will be held at 3:30 pm in the conference room of Election Building, Agargaon, Dhaka. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal will preside over it. EC officials said the schedule will be announced after the meeting.
It is known that the schedule of the fourth phase of upazila elections has been kept on the agenda of the meeting. Sixth Upazila Parishad elections will be held in the first phase on May 8 in 150 upazilas, and in the second phase on May 21 in 161 upazilas. In the third phase, the election of 112 upazilas will be held on May 29. The Election Commission has made new rules with the provision of mandatory online submission of nomination papers in this year’s upazila elections.
After the Upazila Parishad was introduced in 1985, voting was held on a single day in 1990 and 2009. In 2014, the fourth upazila election was held in six phases and in 2019, the fifth upazila parishad was voted in five phases.
Although the first four upazila elections were non-partisan, due to the amendment of the law, in March 2017, elections were held in three upazilas with party symbols. Later in 2019, a full-fledged election was held on the party symbol. Although it did not participate in the 10th parliamentary elections, the BNP later participated in the non-partisan upazila polls. For the last 10 years, the party has not given a party candidate in the upazila polls. After boycotting the 12th Parliament elections, BNP is not participating in the local elections.
