Royal Challengers Bangalore star Virat Kohli was fined 50 percent of his match fee after taking issue with the umpire’s decision from Kolkata Knight Riders’ match against RCB at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, April 21. After getting out, Kohli was seen arguing with the umpire. In the eyes of many it was a high throw without the ball. But the third umpire thinks the delivery is fair.

KKR bowler Harshit Rana dismissed Kohli with a slow full toss above waist level just outside Kohli’s crease. As Rana runs in and catches the ball with ease, he saves as the ball rises in the air. Kohli immediately went for the review, but it was already the umpire’s review. The third referee took one look and decided it was a fair ball.

It is worth noting that Star Sports has also clarified the waist-high no-ball rule. “According to official rules, Virat was indeed out. The rules state that for a delivery to be considered a no-ball, the ball must be at waist height when it crosses the stump line. In Kohli’s case, when the ball was at waist level, it would be considered a no-ball, as the height at which he faced the ball, as it passed through the step crease, was below waist height, making it a fair pitch according to official rules. “Star Sports” wrote on social media and attached a picture of Kohli’s hawkish trajectory as he got out.

The picture shared by the broadcaster shows that Kohli’s waist height is 1.04 meters if he is upright at the pop-up crease. If the ball reaches waist height at the pop-up crease, it is considered a no-ball, but the height of the crease is 0.92 m, making it a legal pitch. The clarification states that if Kohli stays straight in his crease, the ball will be seen below his waist.

According to MCC Rule 41.7.1, “Without a ball above waist height, any delivery standing upright at the pop-up crease shall be unfair, whenever the umpire calls and signals no. Say.”

As for Kohli, he stood outside his own crease.
