Strong earthquake shook Taiwan

A powerful earthquake shook the capital of Taiwan, Taipei. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was felt on Monday (April 22) afternoon local time in the country.

The Central Meteorological Administration said an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 struck. It originated in eastern Hualien. However, according to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.3. Its origin is 8.9 kilometers deep from the surface.

The news agency AFP reported that Monday’s earthquake hit Taiwan at 5:08 p.m. local time. It is also felt in the capital, Taipei. The US Geological Survey identified the earthquake as magnitude 5.3, with a depth of 8.9 km. The eastern Hualien region was the epicenter of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which struck on April 3, AFP said. It blocked the roads due to landslides around the hilly areas.

An AFP journalist said this was the strongest earthquake or aftershock since the devastating earthquake earlier this month.

Hualien’s fire department said in a post on its official social media channel that it had sent teams to inspect whether there were any casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

Buildings in the main city of Hualien were badly damaged.
