Israeli Labor Party leader Merav Michaeli has called for the disbandment of an army unit he says is killing Palestinians for no real reason.
Anadolu Agency reported that he said this on Sunday.
He made the call following reports that the United States was preparing to impose sanctions on the Netzah Yehuda Battalion for human rights abuses committed by combat units against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
“The sanctions are an acknowledgment of reality and show that Israeli behavior cannot continue in the territories,” he said on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
He said, ‘The violent and corrupt behavior of the Netzah Yehuda Battalion and its entourage has been known for years and nothing has been done to stop it. Washington set up a team two years ago to investigate the conduct of army units.
He added, “Political and military leaders cannot pretend they don’t know about it.”
“The Netzah Yehuda Battalion should have been disbanded years ago,” Michaeli said. This is a battalion that kills Palestinians for no reason and beats and abuses them.’
The battalion was established in 1999 as a special military unit for ultra-Orthodox Jews. All soldiers and officers are male.
