An American woman’s family alleged that she was diagnosed with terminal cancer after using ‘Johnson & Johnson’ powder. Johnson & Johnson and its spin-off company Kenview have been ordered to pay a $45 million fine based on that complaint.

Incidentally, samples of asbestos have been found in Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder. Asbestos is very harmful for children. For adults it can cause danger. A jury in Chicago ruled that Canview was 70 percent responsible for the death of Teresa Garcia. The remaining 30 percent liability belongs to Johnson & Johnson and one of its units. Teresa was diagnosed with cancer in 2020. He had mesothelioma. It is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Johnson & Johnson Kenview knew full well that their baby powder contained asbestos.

Yet they were selling it. ‘Johnson & Johnson’ baby powder has been selling since 1894.

But after 35,000 American women filed a lawsuit accusing the company of cervical cancer, demand for the powder began to decline in the United States. Johnson & Johnson claims that its talc-based products do not cause cancer and has been marketing its baby powder appropriately for over a century. Company officials confirmed earlier this month that they no longer manufacture or sell talc. Johnson & Johnson previously said it would phase out talcum powder from the North American market by 2020 and globally by December 2023. Kenview spokeswoman Melissa Witt declined to comment on the ruling. Eric Haas, head of Johnson’s in-house litigation department, said the company will appeal the jury’s findings.
