Virat Kohli was involved in a controversial decision that angered the former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain during Sunday’s IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Harshit Rana bowled a full delivery to Kohli in the third innings that looked like an over-mid no-ball. Kohli failed to catch the ball and was caught and bowled.

The on-field umpire decided to refer the decision to third umpire Michael Gough, who felt the ball had landed on the batsman and ruled Kohli’s dismissal valid.

Kohli was not happy with the decision and hit his bat on the boundary rope before arguing with the umpire. “RCB have robbed here,” said commentator Harsh Bhogle while discussing the wicket.

According to Rule 41.7.1 of the ICC Playing Rules, “Any delivery other than a delivery above the waist height of the striker standing upright at the pop-up crease shall be considered unfair, whether or not such delivery is made. By the bowler and physical harm to the striker may occur, the umpire shall immediately declare a no ball and give the signal.”

Kohli stood outside the pop-up crease waiting for the delivery and so claimed the delivery went past his waist. But replays showed the trajectory of the ball dropped below his waist. Had Kohli stood inside the crease, the ball would have gone below his waist.
