But after a month and a half, it was learned that the body of the Indian student who was found in the US on March 8, committed suicide by playing the ‘Blue Whale Challenge’ game. This is the first such death of an Indian student studying in a college or university in the USA. And with this source, the deadly sport has once again hit the headlines. The sport in which the first suicide incident occurred in India was in 2017. In an advisory the same year, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India called ‘Blue Whale Game’ (The Suicide Game) as inducing suicide.

This time, due to the death of an Indian student in the USA, students and parents are being asked to be aware of this. The 20-year-old deceased was a first-year student at the University of Massachusetts. However, due to the objection of his family, the identity is not being brought forward. Bristol County District Attorney’s spokesman Greg Milliot said they are currently investigating the incident as a suicide.

He was initially thought to be a student at Boston University. It was also reported in various media that he was killed by looting. It is also said that the body was found in a vehicle in the forest. But later a Boston newspaper revealed his true identity. According to sources, this young man’s ‘challenge’ was to hold his breath for two minutes. It is believed to be the cause of death.

However, the spokesperson Miliot did not publicly say anything about the matter. His statement, ‘We do not have detailed information yet. However, it is apparently being investigated as a suicide incident. We are awaiting the final report of the medical examiner before closing the case.’ After this no further update was given by the government media. It is reported that messages or calls were not answered.

The online game debuted in 2015-16. Created by a man named Philip Budeikin. Who was convicted by Russia in 2013. He encouraged at least 16 teenagers to commit suicide. Philip was jailed for three years for that. Then was born the ‘Blue Whale Game’ or ‘The Suicide Game’. In the 50-day game, the players are given various tough ‘challenges’ from the beginning.

Social media often targets young children with depression as ‘players’. Those who give challenges or tasks are called ‘curators’. At first the challenge is as simple as watching a horror movie alone, but it gets harder as it progresses. At the end, the players are pushed to commit suicide. Players cannot even quit mid-game for fear of being subjected to constant ‘blackmailing’ and ‘cyberbullying’ online. Blue whales have killed more than 130 children in various countries including India, US, China, and Russia.

How is the impact in India?The first blue whale death occurred in India in July 2017. In that incident, a 14-year-old school student in Mumbai committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of a house. Later that list got longer. The body of a class 10 student of West Bengal was recovered from the toilet. His face was wrapped in plastic and tied with rope. A former minister’s son also committed suicide by jumping from a height in Delhi. A Kerala teenager committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope after being challenged by a blue whale. The Government of India published an advisory in this regard that year.
