The bodies of three people, including a school student, were recovered from the Padma river in Rajshahi. The bodies were recovered from separate places in the river on Sunday (April 21). Among them, the diving team of fire service recovered two bodies from Navganga Ghat in Harupur of Paba Upazila and one from Kheyaghat in Chakrajapur area of Bagha Upazila.
According to local sources, two people drowned in the Padma while taking a bath around 1 pm. They are Bappi Hossain (16), son of Babu Hossain of Sayergacha area of the city. He appeared for the SSC examination from Rajshahi Court Academy School. The other is Monir Hossain (20). He is the son of Shaheen Hossain of the same area. Fire service recovered their bodies from Navaganga ghat around 4 pm.
Abu Sama, Senior Station Officer of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defense, said, “Due to excessive heat, some people took a bath together in the river at noon. At this time, Bappi and Monir drowned. Later, when the fire service was informed, two people were rescued dead around 4 pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajshahi Naval Police Station. Moniruzzaman said, ‘Their bodies have been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue. Will be handed over to relatives after legal process.’
On the other hand, Asad Hossain (25) went missing after his canoe sank while fishing in Kheyaghat area of Padma river in Chakrajapur, Baghar, on Saturday (April 20). The diving team of Faisal Service recovered the body from Kheyaghat around 1 pm on Sunday. Asad is the son of Ashraful Islam of Chakrajapur.
Asad’s younger brother Kayes Uddin said, ‘We are poor people. I run the family by fishing in the Padma. The brother went missing while fishing on Saturday afternoon. The fire service revealed the body on Sunday afternoon.
Abu Sama, senior station officer of Rajshahi Fire Service, said, “After receiving the news, the diving team raided the spot and recovered the body and handed it over to the family.”
Charghat Naval Police in-charge SI Habibur Rahman said, ‘A case of death has been registered in Bagha Police Station. As there was no complaint from the relatives, the post-mortem was not done.
Earlier, on April 19, a child named Siam Hossain Sajib (10) drowned in Mushidpur Kheyaghat of Padma. He is the son of Sujan Ali of Khairhat village of Gargari union of the upazila. On April 14, two children named Jhilik and Jannati Khatun went missing after taking a bath at the ghat of Padma river in Maniker Char of Chaumadiya in Chakrajapur Union. Later Jannati’s body was recovered but Jhelik is still not found. Jannati is the daughter of Abul Kashem Mandal of Bangla Bazar Char area of Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia and Monir Uddin of Patghat village of Joydevpur of Jhilik Chuadanga. They came to the wedding ceremony of the daughter of their relative Chaumadiyar Maniker Charer Abdul Mannan.
