RAB has arrested the main accused in the case of beating to death a garment worker named Abdul Latif (28) who was invited to Sreepur in Gazipur last Eid. Arrest Mofazzal Hossain (35) was arrested from a house in Tengria village of Haripur Upazila of Thakurgaon in the early hours of Sunday (April 21). RAB-1 Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed the matter.
The arrested Mofazzal Hossain is the son of Sarafat Ali of Kewa Paschim Khand area of Sripur. Abdul Latif is the son of Abdul Khalek of the same area. He was recently fired from a local KSS garment factory. They are friends of each other. The two used to consume and deal in drugs at the house of ‘noted drug dealer’ Shireen Akhter, wife of Nazmul Alam, of Baherarchala area of Sreepur. They had a dispute over business. Relatives and local residents of the deceased said that he was beaten to death due to a dispute.
Latif’s younger sister Khadija Akhtar said, ‘Last Thursday around 8:30 pm, his friend Mofazzal called Latif to the drug dealer Shireen’s house about the Eid invitation. After eating and drinking, when he went out of the house, Mofazzal beat him with bamboo. At one stage, he fell down on the ground after being hit on the head. Cousin Farooq, maternal cousin Noor Islam and Kabir Hossain took him to Sripur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead around 10:30 pm.
ASP Mahfuzur Rahman said, ‘Last Thursday night, Mofazzal called Latif to the house of identified drug dealer Shireen in Baherarchala area and beat him to death. The next day Latif’s father Abdul Khalek filed a case with Mofazzal and Shireen at Sreepur police station.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police, referring to the RAB-1, said that the main accused Mofazzal is hiding in the village of Tengria. Later, RAB-1 and 13 conducted a joint operation and arrested him from there. Mofazzal admitted his involvement in Latif’s murder during the initial interrogation.
Sreepur police station OC Akbar Ali Khan said, ‘RAB handed over Mofazzal to the police station in the morning. Sent to the district jail through the court at noon.
