A Chhatra League worker named Arif (19) was hacked to death by the opposing workers due to the dispute over dominance in Sylhet.
The incident took place on Monday (November 20) around 12:00 PM in the Baluchar TV Gate area of the city. Police arrested two people in connection with the murder.
On Tuesday (November 21), the funeral of the deceased was completed at TV Gate Jamia Masjid. He was later buried at Manikpir Mound.
The deceased Chhatra League activist is the son of Phatik Mia of TV Gate area of Arif Nagar. It is said that he is an active worker of District Chhatra League President Nazmul Islam group.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Azbahar Ali Sheikh has confirmed the fact that the Chhatra League activist was hacked to death and 2 people were detained.
The arrested are Bachchu Mia’s son Roni (21) and Kamal Mia’s son Mamun Majumdar (28). Both of them are former president of Sylhet District Chhatra League and 36th Ward Councilor of Sylhet City Corporation Hiron Mahmud Nipu Group.
According to local sources, there was a dispute between the former president of the District Chhatra League and 36th Ward Councilor of Sylhet City Corporation Hiron Mahmud Nipu and the current president of the District Chhatra League Nazmul Islam over the spread of dominance. As a result, Arif was thrown on the road after being cut and stabbed with a sharp weapon on Sunday (November 19) at quarter past 11. Later the locals took him to Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition. After being admitted to the ICU, the doctor on duty declared him dead at around 1:30 am.
Doctors said he had 23 injuries from sharp weapons in different parts of his body, including his left arm, thigh and leg. He died of excessive bleeding.
Arif’s mother claimed that Arif was beaten up while sitting on the walkway in Baluchar area by the workers of Councilor Hiran Mahmud Nipur group. Today, my son was hacked to death because a case was filed against them at Shahparan police station.
In this regard, Sylhet District Chhatra League President Nazmul Islam said that some identified terrorists attacked Arif in Baluchar area a few days ago. Those who have been torturing people for a long time to establish a reign of terror in this area, brutally killed Arif today.
District BCL president said that no one involved in Arif’s murder will be exempted, district and metropolitan BCL leaders are talking to the administration and if the administration does not arrest the accused, we will hold a program. He also said that the family of the deceased is preparing to file a case.
Hiran Mahmud Nipur, the accused councilor, could not be found even after trying to contact him.
OC of Sylhet Airport Police Station Moin Uddin Sipan told Kalbela that the killings took place due to the expansion of dominance. We are taking this seriously. After the post-mortem of the deceased Arif, the body has been handed over to the family. No case has yet been filed in this incident. But two have been arrested. The operation is on to nab the rest of the accused.
