A. Chhatra League workers were hacked to death under the leadership of the league councillor

Arif Ahmed (19), an activist of the opposition group, was killed by a group of Chhatra League due to its dominance in Sylhet. The deceased is the son of Phatik Mia of Baluchar area of ​​Arif Nagar. Arif is a 12th class student of State College, Tilagarh.

Yesterday, Monday (November 20) around 12 o’clock in the night, Arif was fatally shot in TB Gate area of ​​the city. He was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and died while undergoing treatment at around 1.30 am.

Doctors said that Arif’s body has 15-16 wounds and stab wounds. He died of profuse bleeding. Arif was active in Chhatra League as a follower of Sylhet District Chhatra League President Nazmul Islam. In Baluchar area, Arif and his associates were in conflict for supremacy with former district Chhatra League president and newly-elected ward councilor Hiran Mahmud Nipur group. There was another attack on Arif 4 days before the murder. Arif’s mother reported the incident to the police station on Monday night. Then Arif was killed in the middle of the night.

Arif’s mother Akhi Begum claimed that 15-20 people led by Hiran Mahmud Nipoor, the newly elected councilor of Ward No. 36 of Sylhet City Corporation, killed her son. Akhi Begum ran to where Arif was cut. Meanwhile, he saw Hiran Mahmud Nipu leaving on a motorcycle. He then took the critically injured son to Osmani Hospital in a CNG auto-rickshaw with the help of locals. On the way to the hospital, Arif told his mother that 15-20 people including Hiran Mahmud Nipu, Roni, Mamun, Helal had hacked him.

Sylhet district Chhatra League president Nazmul Islam also blamed former district Chhatra League president Hiran Mahmud Nipur’s party for this murder.

He said, ‘Arif was stabbed to death by workers of Hiran Mahmood’s side. A few days ago, they attacked Arif again.’

Claiming that the attackers were not members of the Chhatra League, he said, ‘They are locally known as scoundrels. They are active in increasing the dominance of Nipu side in the area.

When Ward Councilor Hiran Mahmud called Nipur’s mobile phone to get a statement in this regard, it was found to be switched off.

OC Abul Khair of Shahparan police station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police said that 2 people have been arrested in connection with the murder. They are Anach Ahmed alias Rony (23) and Mamun Majumder (32). They are said to be involved in the politics of Chhatra League.

The OC also said that the complaint filed by his mother Akhi Begum in the earlier incident of beating Arif was recorded as a case on Monday night. Names of 7 people and 10-12 others have been accused in the case. The names of Baluchar’s Anach, Juned, Kala Mamun, Kudrat, Sharif, Sabuj and Helal have been mentioned as accused. The OC said that an operation is underway to arrest those involved in the murder.

According to the police and the family of the deceased Arif, Arif went out to buy medicine from the pharmacy near his house on Monday night. After that, the attackers caught him on a deserted road and left him on the road after cutting off his upper body. Hearing Arif’s screams, his mother Akhi Begum and the people around rushed forward and took him to the hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead shortly after he was taken to the hospital.

According to family sources, Arif’s father Phatik Miah drives a battery-powered auto-rickshaw and mother Akhi Begum works as a cook at someone else’s house. They live on rent in Raja Mia Colony in Baluchar area. Arif is the eldest among four brothers. He was studying in class 12th in State College, Tilagarh.

Arif’s mother Akhi Begum said that after admission in college, when Arif got involved in Chhatra League politics, she told her son not to do politics. Arif then told him that he would not be able to study in college if he did not join the Chhatra League. District BCL president Namjul Islam also said that Arif was active in BCL politics even though he did not hold any position.

Nazmul also said, ‘Hiran Mahmud Nipu does not want any worker from Tilagarh, Baluchar, TB Gate area to do politics with me. He wants sole dominance in that area. And because of that dominance, Arif was killed by the Nipu side.’

Nazmul demanded justice for this murder and said that the BCL will continue the movement to demand the arrest and punishment of the murderers.
