20 years ago, the carpenter Sheikh Md. Pallavi of the capital. The court sentenced four of the 10 accused to life imprisonment in the Abbas murder case. As the charges against the other 6 accused were not proved, they were acquitted.
Judge Iqbal Hossain of the Special Session Judge Court-5 of Dhaka gave this verdict on Tuesday.
The convicts sentenced to life are – Panchananda Sarkar, A. Chhattar aka Langra Chhattar, Signs and Dreams. In addition to the penalty, each was fined 20,000 taka, in default they were sentenced to another six months in prison.
Among those convicted was Panchananda Sarkar Jail. He was produced in court before the verdict. After the verdict, he was taken to jail with a warrant. As the other three accused are absconding, the court has issued arrest warrants against them along with sentencing warrants.
The acquitted accused are Jewel alias Abul Khair, Dukhai alias Ganesh Chandra Sheel, Neelkant Mandal, Bhaben Chandra Sarkar, Shamim and Siraj alias Sirajul Islam.
On September 3, after presenting the arguments of the state party and the accused party, he fixed the date of judgment. After that, the verdict date was postponed several times.
According to the details of the case, the victim Sheikh Md. Abbas was returning home on May 11, 2003 after work with his partner Monir Hossain. On the way, Abbas was hacked to death with a chapati on the road in North Kalshi area.
The day after the incident, Abbas’ brother Sheikh Akkas Ali filed a case at the Pallabi police station. On June 13, 2004, sub-inspector Mirash Uddin of Pallabi police station investigated the case and gave a charge sheet to the court against the accused. Later, the court ordered to start the trial by forming charges against the accused. During the trial of the case, the court heard the testimony of 12 people.
