History of Rohit surpassing de Villiers

AB de Villiers was the owner of this record for so long. Today, Rohit left behind the Proteas batter known for ‘360 degrees’. Rohit’s six off Ackermann in the seventh over of the innings against the Netherlands in Bengaluru was his 59th of the year.

No one has hit more sixes in a year before. The highest so far was de Villiers’ 58 sixes, which he hit in 2015. Shubman Gill hit 56 sixes in 2019. Shahid Afridi is fourth in this list with 48 sixes in 2002. Pakistan’s Mohammad Wasim is at the fifth place in the list with 47 sixes this year.

Apart from the most sixes in a year, Rohit also holds the record for the most sixes in a World Cup tournament as a captain. England’s Ewin Morgan hit 22 sixes in the 2019 World Cup. Rohit hit 23rd six today.

However, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi hit 351 sixes in ODIs. Chris Gayle is second with 331 sixes. India’s captain Rohit Sharma is hitting a six right after the batsman in West Indies.
