Officials said the bodies were recovered from the wreckage of the burnt houseboat near jetty number 9 of the lake. However, the charred bodies are not in an identifiable condition.

The Daily Star’s Delhi correspondent quoted the Srinagar Police press release as saying that Anindya Kaushal, Das Gupta and Mohammad Moinud died in this incident.

Eight people were rescued alive from the houseboat.

Police officials said the identity of the deceased was confirmed from records of India’s Overseas Regional Registration Office and records of houseboat operators.

The cause of the houseboat fire is yet to be ascertained.

However, officials said preliminary investigations suggest that a faulty heating device started the fire in one of the houseboats first.

Officials said the bodies will be handed over only after DNA samples from the family members of the deceased are confirmed.
