Winter vegetables in Joypurhat market: Prices have started to fall
Jaipurhat, November 12, 2023 (BASS): Due to increase in the import of winter vegetables, especially cabbage, radish, brinjal, coriander leaves, carrots, leeks and other vegetables, the prices have started to decrease in the haat-bazars of the district.
It is known from talking to the vendors that the farmers are cultivating early varieties of vegetables in the hope of more profit. As a result, initially the vegetable market was high, but now the prices have started to decrease due to high imports. After visiting the district town’s East market, fish market and wholesale market, Nahunhat vegetable market, it is known that brinjal is now selling at Tk. 40 from Tk. 80 per kg, Radish from Tk. 50 to Tk. 30 per kg, Cauliflower is now being sold at Tk. 50 from Tk. 120 per kg. , Badhakopi from Tk 60 to Tk 50, Indian onion from Tk 120 to Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, domestic onion from Tk 150 to Tk 130, fresh onion from Tk 100 to Tk 80 per kg, cucumber from Tk 30 40 Tk, sweet pumpkin Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg, gourd Tk 35 to Tk 40 per peach, gourd Tk 60, beetroot Tk 60, carrot Tk 140 per kg, potato esteric at Tk 55 per kg now selling at Tk 40, desi pakri variety potato from Tk 65 Now selling at Tk 55 per kg, papaya at Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kg, kachur lati at Tk 60 per kg now selling at Tk 50, patal at Tk 70 per kg now at Tk 40, beans at Tk 120 per kg now selling at Tk 70 to Tk 80, bitter gourd at Tk 60, Prawns are sold at Tk 40, tomatoes at Tk 140, chillies at Tk 140, ginger at Tk 260, garlic at Tk 280. Apart from this, coriander leaves are being sold at Tk 200 per kg, spinach at Tk 80 per kg. Wholesaler Aslam Hossain, Tuhin Islam said that due to the high import of winter vegetables in the market, the prices have started to decrease. Apart from this, golden breed chickens are being sold at Tk 280 per kg, boilers at Tk 175 to Tk 180 per kg, beef at Tk 700, rice at Tk 350 to Tk 500 per kg depending on the type. Rice market is stable. In the current market, miniket is Tk 62 to Tk 64 per kg, Katari local variety Tk 62 to Tk 64 per kg, Katari Padma super variety Tk 70 per kg, BR 28 variety Tk 55 to Tk 56, BR 49 variety Tk 54 to Tk 55, Gold 5 variety of rice Tk 50 to Tk 52. KG is being sold.
According to the sources of the local agriculture extension department, under the intensive annual crop production program for the financial year 2023-2024, the target of vegetable cultivation in the district has been set at 5 thousand hectares of land. All together, this time the production target of vegetables has been set at 1 lakh 10 thousand 876 MT. Which has been sent to different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka to meet the needs of the district. The prices of early varieties of vegetables were slightly higher when they were released in the market, but now the prices have started to decrease in the market. The agriculture department said more imports of winter vegetables will hit the market in the next week and prices are likely to fall further.
Deputy Director of District Agriculture Extension Department Agronomist Rahela Parveen said that farmers of Jaipurhat are becoming interested in cultivating early varieties of vegetables. He also said that the price of vegetables is decreasing due to the high import of vegetables in the market.
