In Noakhali’s Begamganj upazila, the husband has been accused of burning his wife’s body by pouring kerosene for dowry.

The incident took place in Mujahidpur village of the upazila on Saturday (November 11) at noon. The victim Najma Akhtar (20) is the daughter of Md. Yusuf of Hajipur in Choumuhani Municipality.

He has been admitted to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. Doctors said that 25 percent of his body was burnt.

It is known that five years ago, Najma Akter got married to Fakhrul Islam’s son Md Russell of Mujahidpur village of Begumganj upazila. After the marriage, Najma’s family gave Rs 2 lakh as dowry to Russell. On November 6, Russell sent Najma to her father’s house to bring another Tk 50,000 to buy a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. As Najma returned without money, Russell started breaking the furniture in the house on Saturday afternoon. At one point, Russell poured kerosene on Najma’s body and set it on fire. At that time, Russell stopped the people of the house from trying to rescue Najma. At one point the locals rescued him and first took him to Begumganj Upazila Health Complex. In the evening, he was shifted to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital.

Md. Istiaq Hossain, doctor of the hospital’s emergency department, said that 25 percent of Najma’s body was burnt in the fire. Big blisters appeared on various parts of his body, including on his chest and stomach. He said that he may be sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced burns.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, Md. Anwarul Islam, said that the police were sent to the victim in the hospital after receiving information. In this case legal action will be taken based on the written complaint.
