Diwali or Diwali festival has various information from Hindu mythology and history. According to Puranic legend, Dhanvantari came out of the sea with amritbhand on the Troyodashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha month of Kartika after churning the ocean of milk. Hence the name of the tithi is Dhanvantari Troyodashi (Dhanteras). On that day, the goddess Lakshmi also rose from the sea at the same time. Then Lakshmi Devi returned to heaven after the fight with Devasura for the share of amrit on this Kartiki new moon night. In remembrance of that event, the new moon night is decorated by lighting lamps.
