Ghulam Mohammad Quader
Jatiya Party Chairman and Opposition Deputy Leader Ghulam Mohammad Quader said that the minimum wage of garment workers is a joke. In the current market system, the proposed minimum wage is Tk 12,500, nothing. He reiterated his support for the movement of garment workers to increase their wages.
He said that there are complaints that excessive force is being used to suppress the movement of garment workers. Many casualties are being reported. The use of force to suppress the movement of garment workers is unacceptable in a civilized society. He expressed his anger and sorrow over the death of agitating worker Anjuara Khatun. He also demanded to ensure proper treatment of the injured workers. At the same time, the Jatiya Party Chairman also urged the concerned to accept the demand for increase in the wages of the garment workers.
In a statement today, GM Quader said that the workers of the garment industry started a vigorous movement last month demanding the minimum wage to be increased from 8,000 to 23,000. After several rounds of meetings, the workers demanded a minimum wage of Tk 20,393. But the owner offered to pay Tk 10,400. Later, with the help of the government, the owner proposed to pay the minimum wage of 12 thousand 500 to the workers. Not accepting this proposal, the workers of the garment industry have once again started a movement. Lives and livelihoods of workers in the export industry are being mercilessly treated. The workers who play an important role in earning foreign exchange are living the most inhuman life. Inhuman discrimination is going on with the workers who contribute to the prosperity of the country. He said to the government, increase the salary of the workers or reduce the price of daily commodities.
