A worker was allegedly shot dead by the police during a protest by garment workers in Gazipur. The deceased’s name is Anjuara Begum (24). Another worker named Jamal Uddin was reportedly shot. Anjuara is the wife of Jamal Hossain of Char Natipara area of Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj. He worked as a sewing machine operator at Islam Garments in Konabari.
AKM Ashraf Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Metropolitan’s Konabari Police Station, confirmed the death of Anjuara.
Rejecting the minimum wage announced on Tuesday (November 7), the workers of several garment factories in Gazipur City Corporation, including Konabari and Zarun, went on strike today (November 8).
They started protesting after 7 am today. When two people were taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 12 noon and 12:30 in a clash with the police, the doctor on duty declared one of them dead.
Jamal Uddin, who was shot, said, I work in Islam Islam Garments. I was shot by the police while going to office in the morning. Later I was first rescued and taken to a local hospital. From there he was brought to Dhaka Medical for advanced treatment. Currently undergoing treatment in the emergency department.
