The court has sentenced husband Rafiqul Islam Apu (34) to life imprisonment in the case of killing his wife Sagari Begum (21) for not paying dowry as required and preventing alienation in the village of Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur. At the same time he was fined five lakh taka.

On Tuesday afternoon, the judge of Rangpur Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal-2. Roknuzzaman announced the verdict.

Convicted Rafiqul Islam is the son of Wahed Mandal of Kandi Kabilapara village of Pirgacha upazila.

According to court and case sources, Rafiqul Islam, son of Wahed Mandal of Kandi Kabilapara village of Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur, got married to Sagari Begum (21), daughter of Azim Uddin of Dhirganjhat Rahmatpur village of Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon. At the time of marriage, Azim Uddin gave one lakh and 15 thousand rupees as dowry for the happiness of his daughter; But after a few days of marriage, Rafiqul kept pressuring Sagari by demanding one lakh taka dowry.

When Sagari did not agree, she was physically and mentally tortured. In this situation, Sagari caught her sister’s estranged relationship with Rafiqul Islam Apu. Sagari was once tried to kill in this incident. Later on 29 December 2017 Rafiqul killed Sagari by strangulation.

In this incident, Azim Uddin filed a murder case against Rafiqul Islam Apu and six people including his mother, father, brother and sister-in-law as the plaintiff. The investigation officer submitted the charge sheet against them. After long testimony in this case, the court sentenced Rafiqul Islam to life imprisonment. The judge acquitted the others as the charges were not proved.

The matter was confirmed by the court’s public counsel (PP) Jahangir Hossain Tuhin. He said that Sagari Begum was a victim of her husband’s adultery and dowry. We are satisfied with this verdict.
