A BNP leader named Jagir Hossain (38) died after being shot in the attack on RAB’s patrol team at Jaliapalong in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar. He died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College (CHMEC) Hospital. District BNP has called morning-evening hartal in Cox’s Bazar district on Wednesday to protest his death.

Confirming the death, Jagir’s nephew Shihab Uddin said that his uncle (Jagir) was shot in the stomach during the incident. He was then admitted to Chamek Hospital. He died there while undergoing treatment.
According to the police, the deceased Jagir Hossain is accused number 14 in the case filed by RAB at Ukhia police station.
Locals said that the RAB patrol team went to Pinashia village of Jaliapalong union to catch the accused Ukhia Upazila BNP General Secretary Soltan Mahmud Chowdhury along with other accused in the midnight last Sunday. At that time, hundreds of BNP leaders attacked the RAB with sticks and threw bricks. A RAB vehicle was also damaged in the brick and mortar attack. At one point there was a shooting incident. Three people including Jagir Hossain were shot at this time. In this incident, RAB named 42 leaders and activists of BNP as plaintiff and filed a case at Ukhia police station on Tuesday morning. The statement of the case mentions an unnamed ‘number of accused’.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia police station Sheikh Mohammad Ali told Samakal that a case has been filed against 42 people in connection with the attack on RAB. However, no one has been arrested in this case till 6 pm on Tuesday.
The OC also said that it was reported that Jagir Hossain died in the Chittagong Medical College Hospital, injured in the firing from both sides.
Cox’s Bazar district BNP president Shahjahan Chowdhury claimed the incident of attack on RAB as a ‘misunderstanding’ and told Samakal, ‘This incident happened without recognizing RAB. Three activists of BNP were shot in this incident. Among them Jagir Hossain died.’
