Police and RAB claim that BNP supporters attacked a team of RAB when they went to arrest the accused in the sabotage case in Painasia village of Jaliapalong Union on Sunday night. RAB opened fire on the attackers in self-defence.

Cox’s Bazar district BNP co-office secretary Advocate Hasan Siddiqui said that a day-long hartal will be observed in Cox’s Bazar to protest the death of Jagir Hossain.

When asked about RAB’s arrest operation, Ukhia Upazila BNP Secretary Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury said, ‘Nothing like that happened in Ukhia that day. Still, the police filed a case against 35 BNP leaders and activists including me.

He also said, ‘RAB was going to my village and arresting people. They also raided my house even when I was not present. RAB opened fire on civilians when they protested the arrest without warrant.’

From there, the three injured by RAB were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Jagir died there,’ he added.

In this incident, RAB filed a case against Sultan Mahmud, the deceased Jagir Hossain and 42 others as defendants.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station Mohammad Ali said, ‘RAB has filed a case as a plaintiff for the attack on the elite force this morning. I heard that an injured BNP worker from Ukhiya died in Chittagong. If you want to know more about this matter, talk to RAB.’

Cox’s Bazar RAB-15 Senior Assistant Director (Legal and Media) Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Chalam Chowdhury was called several times but he did not receive them.

Daily Prothom Alo quoted Abu Chalam Chowdhury as saying on Monday that when a RAB team went to Painasia village to arrest the accused in the sabotage case, BNP supporters surrounded the force and pelted bricks. The windows of some RAB vehicles were broken in the attack. In this situation, RAB opened fire to disperse the people in self-defense.
