After 18 years, the court sentenced seven people to life imprisonment in the murder case of farmer Manik Mia in Hossainpur, Kishoreganj. In addition, each accused has been fined Tk 50,000.
On Tuesday, November 7, around 3:30 p.m., Kishoreganj Additional Sessions Judge Court-1 Judge Md. Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque announced the verdict. Six of the seven convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment were present when the verdict was announced.
The accused are, Md. Shafiqul Islam, Jahangir Alam, Babul Mia, Lincoln, Emdadul Haque, Majedul Haque and Raisuddin. Shafiqul is absconding among them. All of them are residents of Charalgi village of Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh bordering Hossainpur.
Court Public Prosecutor Abu Nacher Farooq Muhammad Sanju confirmed this information.
According to the summary of the case, Manik Miad of the same village had a land dispute with the accused. The two parties quarreled several times about this. Even after the arbitration, the dispute did not decrease. On November 2, 2005, farmer Manik was attacked by the enemy while returning home from Hajipur Bazar in Hossainpur, Kishoreganj.
The accused hacked him and fatally injured him. Later, he was taken to Gafargaon Upazila Hospital in a coma, where he died. The deceased Manik Mia is the son of Kalim Uddin of Charalgi village.
Two days after the incident, on November 4, the deceased’s elder brother Anichur Rahman filed a murder case with the Hossainpur Police Station mentioning the names of seven people. After the investigation, the police submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 18, 2008. 18 years after the murder, the judge announced the verdict today.
Defendant advocate Md. Jalal Uddin said, we did not get justice in the court. The Hon’ble Court gave life to seven persons. The evidence we presented would have acquitted the accused. We will appeal to the High Court and hope to get justice there.
