Police are taking the accused to jail after the verdict was announced in Rangpur.

A court sentenced a young man to life imprisonment for killing his wife in Pirgacha upazila of Rangpur. Apart from this, five people were acquitted from the case.

On Tuesday, the judge of Rangpur Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-2. Roknuzzaman announced the verdict in the presence of the accused, said the counsel for the state (PP) Jahangir Hossain Tuhin.

The convicted Rafiqul Islam Apu (34) is the son of Wahed Mandal of Kandi Kabilapara village of upazila.

Regarding the case, PP Jahangir said, “Rafiqul is married to Sagari Begum (21), daughter of Azim Uddin of Dhirganjhat Rahmatpur village of Haripur police station of Thakurgaon. At the time of marriage, Azim gave Tk 1 lakh 15 thousand as dowry for his daughter’s happiness.

“But after a few days of marriage, Rafiqul kept pressuring Sagari for another one lakh taka as dowry. When Sagari refused to bring the money, Rafiqul physically and mentally tortured her.”

He also said, “Meanwhile, Sagari caught her sister’s extramarital relationship with Rafiqul.” Sagari was tried to kill in this incident. Later on the night of December 29, 2017, Sagari was killed by suffocation by Rafiqul.”

Sagari’s father became the plaintiff in this incident and filed a murder case with the police station accusing six people including Rafiqul and his mother, father, brother and sister-in-law.

Later, PP Jahangir said that six people were accused and the police filed a charge sheet in the court.

After taking the testimony, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined five lakh rupees, PP said.

Sagari was a victim of her husband’s extramarital affairs and dowry, said the lawyer for the state.
