
‘The bus was running normally since leaving Dhaka’s Mohakhali. However, after crossing the Gazipur intersection, the driver started driving at a reckless speed. Several accidents were going to happen. Despite repeated prohibitions, the driver did not listen. On the contrary, he told us, sit well, don’t talk too much. But the end was not saved. Before entering the city of Mymensingh I had to meet with an accident. Many people have died in accidents because there was damage to their foreheads, and many people like me are injured and crying in the hospital.’
Selina Begum (50), a garment worker under treatment in Ward No. 10 of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, was speaking the words. He was injured in a collision between a bus and a pickup at Shikarikanda on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. He said that he was going to his father’s house in Sherpur Sadar after taking leave from Garment. He was supposed to return to Dhaka again on Friday after spending three days off.
The incident took place at Shikarikanda area of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Monday (November 6) at 12:30 pm when Fayaz and Taj Paribahan overtaking a Sherpur-bound pickup from Dhaka. Meanwhile, the pickup overturned on the side of the road and the speeding bus climbed over the highway divider and hit the billboard pole.
The front part of the bus was twisted in the accident. At that time, two people died on the spot and two more died after being taken to the hospital. On receiving the news, police and fire service and locals rescued 40 injured people and admitted them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Eyewitness Kamrul Hasan said that the speeding bus met with an accident while overtaking the pickup. Some of them were sitting in shops on the side of the road. After hearing the sound, I came and saw many people injured, two people died on the spot after being crushed by the bus. Many people from the neighborhood come. We try to rescue the injured and send them to the hospital. The police and fire service came after receiving the information.
Kotwali Model Police Station OC Shah Kamal Akand said that the bodies of two unidentified persons were recovered from the spot and 40/50 injured persons were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and two others died while undergoing treatment. The identity of the deceased is not yet known.
He also said that work has been started to remove the buses and billboards that fell on the road due to the accident. Traffic is normal now.
