Mahbubur Rahman (55), Chairman of Payaraband Union Parishad of Mithapukur Upazila of Rangpur, was hacked to death with a fishing rod. The incident took place at Payaraband Bazaar last Sunday around 10:30 pm. In this incident, a person named Harun (28) was arrested and handed over to the police by the locals.

According to the police and local sources, while preparing to go home after closing the medicine shop in Payraband Bazar, the man named Harun suddenly attacked Mahbubur Rahman with a fishing rod. At this time, the locals arrested Haroon. Later Chairman Mahbubur Rahman was rescued and taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died.

The deceased Mahbubur Rahman was also known as Jamaat leader. He was elected chairman on the nomination of Jamaat. A source confirmed that he was the former president of Rangpur district student camp and currently assistant secretary of Mithapukur upazila jamaat.

Mithapukur Police Station OC Mostafizar Rahman said, ‘We have received information that a person hacked Mahbub Chairman with a fish cutting stick. The chairman died after being taken to hospital. The accused has been arrested. In this incident, extra precautions have been taken as the situation in the area has come to a standstill.
